The Minister of Music, Worship & Fine Arts (MWFA) gives direction, oversight, coordination, and unity to the ministries of music, drama, dance and the visual arts
and incorporates these in the worship of the church so that the worship of the congregation is enhanced to the glory of God. This ministry ultimately helps the church fulfill its God-given vision to help people worship God and grow in their relationship with Christ and with each other.
The Minister of MWFA shall build on David Chapel’s longstanding music tradition of excellence, grow and implement a music, worship and fine arts ministries that are God-honoring, broad, exciting, and inspirational. Church references will be required.
Qualifications
The Minister of MWFA should have a demonstrated and proven track record of effective leadership. A college degree is preferred. Additional study and/or experience in the areas of ministry will be helpful. Passing criminal, financial and sexual misconduct background checks required.
The Minister of MWFA should:
- demonstrate a mature Christian faith and commitment to being a disciple of Christ;
- have a calling to music ministry and an understanding that the position of Minister of MWFA is one of servanthood;
- be a worshiper of God who is enthusiastic and a self starter, encourager, visionary who enjoys entering into, building and maintaining collegial relationships with people.
- possess instrumental skills on piano, organ or other musical instruments; and
Other qualities desired in an ideal candidate are:
- Discipleship – must be a Christ-centered individual with a passion for excellence in music, knowledge of God’s word and a dedication to ministry and discipleship.
- Leadership ability—able to work collegially with musicians, artists and other leaders, and pastorally with a diverse congregation
- Theologically grounded—able to articulate a theology of worship that demonstrates a solid grasp of historic and biblical principles and contemporary issues in Christian worship
- Musically trained—a) understands and experienced with music from a variety of genres and generations, with particular emphasis on contemporary music (“praise and worship,”contemporary arrangements of traditional hymns and Black gospel music) and b) proficiency in playing music-by-ear and ability to read music preferred; proficiency in playing piano, organ and/or keyboard; and comfortable being musical accompanist with choirs, etc.
Responsibilities
- Resource all worship services at the church, particularly the music component.
- Set vision for worship ministry to help support and complement the vision of the pastor.
- Assist the pastor with planning Sunday morning services in consultation with pastor and/or pastor’s designee
- Coordinate with the pastor and music staff to provide meaningful music that is timely and appropriate for each context
- Supervise all paid and volunteer staff and leaders in MWFA.
- Personally direct MWFA groups in the light of spiritual gifts and interests, and recruit, support and resource other group leadership.
- Lead and/or coordinate praise component of worship services and rehearsals of choirs/singing groups and instrumentalists. Planning, arranging and providing/conducting music for seasonal presentations, church programs/activities, weddings and funerals requiring music are key duties.
- Choose, procure and provide “fresh” and appropriate music and fine arts that will strengthen the experience for each worship or program context.
- Coordinate the MWFA with the calendar and emphases of the church.
- Seek to develop ways to reach people outside our congregation through existing or new music ministries
- Develop MWFA in the light of changing resources and community needs.
- Manage equipment, instruments and music for MWFA including copyrights and library.
- Oversee sound and video equipment and staff.
- Draft and manage the budget for MWFA based upon church policies and practices.
- Ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form.
- Passing criminal, financial and sexual misconduct background checks.
- Other responsibilities as agreed upon under the direction of the Pastor.
Accountability
The Minister of Music, Worship & Fine Arts is directly accountable to the Pastor.
Compensation
This position will be compensated with a salary commensurate with experience, education and the salaries for similar positions in other similarly situated churches in our area, as determined by the Senior Pastor.
